The Writers Guild student organization at Black Hawk College recently announced the winners of its first-ever Flash Fiction Contest.

The writing competition was a “thrilling challenge where keeping it short meets its brilliance.” Students had from April 9-23 to craft “captivating stories within the tight limits of 250-600 words.”

Out of 22 submissions, the Top 3 were:

  • 1st – Olivia Gratton of Moline – “The Substitute” – $100 Amazon gift certificate
  • 2nd – Dori O’Dell of Cambridge – “Fingers of Death” – $50 BHC bookstore certificate
  • 3rd – Vix Dang of Rock Island – “Question” – $25 Amazon gift certificate

The contest sponsors also presented four additional awards:

  • Most Climactic – Reice McCormick of Clinton, IA – “My Cryptic Mind”
  • Best Dialogue – Grace DeVrieze of Sherrard – “Don’t Whistle at Night”
  • Most Creative Concept – Justine Boelens of Geneseo – “Endless Serenity”
  • Most Emotional – Taylor Folsom of Erie – “The Day I Met God”

Awards were presented May 7 at the Writers Guild Grammy Night.
