Tips for Student Veterans and Future Student Veterans

Veterans make up a small percentage of our nation’s population and an even smaller percentage of our student body, and for those individuals I wanted to share some tips I hope you find useful.

For current student veterans:

  • I highly recommend using the Veterans Resource Center at the Quad-Cities Campus in Building 4, Room 117. It provides computers, a lounge area with a TV, snacks, a guitar, cards, a microwave and a fridge. You also can find out what veteran-related events are happening soon.
  • For example, once a month the student veterans can enjoy free food and a fun event when the student veterans in the QC get together. You also can find out when the Quad Cities Veteran Network gets together, so you have a chance to talk to employers and VA representatives. (They also provide free food and sometimes sponsor events.)
  • Not necessarily campus related, but don’t forget to take advantage of your military discounts. There is a plethora of discounts and offers for all different interests. My personal favorite site to use is ID.me which offers discounts on many big brands like Nike and Under Armour®. Vet Tix is also a good one for concerts and events.

For future students:

  • If and when you decide to attend Black Hawk College, remember that your DD-214 and Joint Service Transcript could potentially equate to college credits (depending on your schooling).
  • If you plan on being a full-time student, using the Post 9/11 GI Bill and taking the minimum required courses in person, you’ll receive a monthly housing allowance (MHA).
  • Consider applying for the Illinois Veteran Grant (if you’re eligible), which offers additional benefits and tuition. Illinois and Texas are the only states to offer such a substantial educational benefit for veterans.
  • I implore you that if you even remotely think about coming to Black Hawk College, talk to our coordinator of veterans services to find out what all you are eligible for. Also, depending on your service, your child/spouse may qualify for educational benefits.
