Navigating Gender Inequalities as a Women in Ag

Traditionally, agriculture has been a male-dominated field, but there has been a noticeable shift as women take on more roles in farming, agribusiness and agricultural leadership. The increase of women in agriculture has become a significant trend and is reshaping our industry. However, being a woman in a male-dominated workplace presents its unique challenges. Speaking out against any inequalities and unfairness you see may seem daunting, but is essential to maintain a safe and comfortable environment that encourages women to remain in agriculture. Here are my tips to successfully stand up for yourself if faced with inequality in the workplace:

Know Your Rights

Familiarize yourself with workplace laws and policies regarding discrimination and harassment. These are put in place to protect you, so recognizing when you feel you have been wronged and how you can take action against it is important when trying to advocate for yourself.

Build a Network

Connect with others who share similar experiences. Your female colleagues may have also faced gender-based discrimination or feel strongly about your situation. Even finding a trusted mentor to provide guidance and support throughout your career can offer valuable insights. Having allies makes for a stronger fight against inequality.

Communicate Openly

If you feel comfortable and safe doing so, speak up about any issues you are facing. Oftentimes, the only way to enact change is to address things directly. It’s unfortunate that it falls on you to take this step, but having a network of people who will support you, and being educated on the ways in which you have been mistreated, can create a strong argument for yourself.

Navigating gender-based issues in agricultural spaces is tough, but if you remain confident in your skills and contributions, you will remember that you and many other women belong in this industry and are supported by many.
